What is the Development Squad?
Since 2021, Debate England has run a free Development Squad programme. The programme is exclusively for state-educated pupils who have not yet started year 13; participants have ranged from Years 9 to 12.
Programme participants will receive weekly coaching from former Team England members (either in-person or online), and will also have the opportunity to compete at in-person competitions with other dev squad members.
Application process
Applications for the Development Squad typically open in the spring term each year. Applicants are asked to fill in online form with details about their educational background, debate experience (if any), and interest in participating in the Development Squad. Some applicants may also be called in for an interview.
More detailed information will be publicised ahead of each year’s applications.
What do we typically look for?
While we do ask about applicants’ prior debate experience, this is merely to help us gauge the level at which to pitch our programme. We do not require a history of prior debating success. Instead, our key focus is motivation, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn and grow as a debater.
We do, however, expect participants to commit to i) attending weekly coaching sessions and ii) completing any assigned preparation work ahead of each coaching session.

Here’s what some of our alumni have to say about their experience:
A great experience that has made me a more confident and knowledgeable speaker, with a real passion for debating.
– Ellie Bean (Dev Squad 2021; Team England 2022-2024)
It teaches you life skills too – how to analyse, how to respond on the spot- and is overall a massive confidence boost.
